Who we are

LingoMatrix is a small, independent project built by language learners who were tired of courses that teach "the apple is red" for months before you can say anything useful. Our mission is simple: help anyone start speaking a new language about their own life, for free, in minutes rather than months.

The site is free to use with no account. It is supported by advertising, which never affects what we teach.

Why we built LingoMatrix

Like many language learners, our founder spent months grinding through standard apps — matching cartoon pictures to words, chasing daily streaks, and dodging passive-aggressive reminders whenever life got busy. None of it helped much when actually travelling abroad.

What made the difference was context and timing, not streaks or a huge vocabulary. Learning a small set of words just before they were needed, then using them right away in that real situation, stuck far better than anything the other apps offered.

That just-in-time, context-first approach worked so well on real trips that we decided to share it. LingoMatrix has no guilt trips and no streak pressure — just the words that matter for your situation, ready to practise and use.

How we create our content

Our language guides and phrase pages are written and reviewed by our team, drawing on widely accepted references for each language. The practice tool uses AI to build vocabulary and sentences for your situation, with grammar checks to keep them correct and natural. If you spot a mistake in any language, please tell us — we correct errors quickly.

Why so few words?

Most beginner courses hand you long word lists you never use. The maths says you don't need them. Ten verbs combined with ten nouns and ten adjectives already give you a thousand possible sentences. Add ten pronouns — a fourth dimension — and you reach ten thousand. Every one of them is a sentence you can actually say out loud today.

Why context matters

The forty words aren't generic. You tell LingoMatrix what you're learning the language for — office small talk, travelling, family dinners — and the matrix is generated around that situation. Words tied to a scene you care about are far more memorable than words from an alphabetical list, and you get to use them the same day you learn them.

How to practise

1. Describe your language and situation, then pick your level.
2. Choose one word from each of the four columns.
3. Read the stitched sentence — conjugation and agreement are fixed for you — and play the audio to copy the pronunciation.
4. Hit "Surprise me" to drill random combinations until they feel automatic.

Credit where it's due

This app is built on an idea shared by Chris Lonsdale in his TEDx talk "How to learn any language in six months" (TEDxLingnanUniversity), where he argues that a small, high-leverage core of words plus relevant context beats long vocabulary lists. LingoMatrix is an independent tool inspired by that talk; all credit for the original premise goes to Chris Lonsdale.
